What is the Bmi Calculator?

The BMI Calculator estimates Body Mass Index from height and weight. BMI is a simple screening number used to group weight ranges for adults. It is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.

For example, a person who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 divided by 1.75 squared, which is about 22.9. That falls in the common adult "normal weight" range.

BMI is useful as a broad starting point, but it does not measure body fat, muscle mass, age, sex, pregnancy, or medical history. Athletes, older adults, children, and pregnant people may need a different assessment.

  2. Enter your height and weight.
  3. Read the BMI number and the category shown below it.
  4. Use the category as a general screening clue, not a diagnosis.
