Morse Code Reference

What is the Morse Code?

Morse code is a character encoding system that represents letters, digits, and punctuation as sequences of dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals), originally designed for telegraphy. Developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s, it became the foundation of long-distance communication. This translator converts plain English text to Morse code and decodes Morse code back to text instantly.

How to use the Morse Code

  1. Select the translation direction: Text to Morse or Morse to Text.
  2. Type or paste your input into the text field.
  3. When encoding text, the Morse output uses dots (.) and dashes (-) with spaces between characters and slashes (/) between words.
  4. When decoding, ensure each character is separated by a space and each word by a forward slash or double space.
  5. Click Play Audio to hear the Morse code as actual sound signals.

Frequently asked questions

SOS (... --- ...) is the internationally recognized distress signal. It was chosen not for its letters but because it is easy to transmit and recognize in an emergency - three short, three long, three short.
Standard International Morse Code covers the Latin alphabet (A - Z), digits (0 - 9), and a set of punctuation marks. Characters outside this set (e.g., accented letters, emoji) cannot be directly encoded in standard Morse.
In text notation, letters within a word are separated by a single space, and words are separated by a forward slash (/) or three spaces. The translator uses this convention for both input and output.
